I got the part....and it doen't fit my 2001 S4 w/premium package. After uninstalling the stock autodim mirror, I hooked up the wires (perfect fit), and went to install the mirror...
I could have modified it to fit, but after starting the ignition, I noticed that the compass only lit up with a "C" w/no compass headings.
I'm going to have to return it tomorrow.

The mirror/compass *should* be a self-contained unit, i.e. all you need is power. The company that manufactures the auto-dimming mirror (www.gentex.com) also produces aftermarket mirrors that contain compasses. I looked into them, but could never find one with a red display (no green for me thank you)
Anyway, are you sure you don't have to calibrate the compass for it to work? The sales portion of Gentex is the Mito Corp. The link below goes to the operating instructions. It tells you that the compass must be calibrated and it will show a C until it's done correctly...
PLEASE email me and let me know how this turned out, with specifics/cost, etc! I am highly interested in performing this retrofit to gain a compass in the mirror!!! What "fitment" issues did you have?
Thanks,

Ask one of the '02 guys to look through their manuals about information on calibrating the compass. If there is no button on the Audi mirror (as Mito's directions state), then maybe Audi has another way to calibrate it?
It also says that you can just drive around for an hour! :-)

Thanks to AllroadGuy:
# 4 Z 7 8 5 7 5 1 1 0 1 C
and cost me about $186, but the retail on the part is $270. I got it at Bernardi of Natick, MA. But I heard there are only 3 in the country until next month.

http://www.mitocorp.com/mirrop1.htm</a

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these for my A4. (clairparts maybe?)
Did you ever get it mounted? did you have to heavily modify anything to get it to fit?
TIA,
Steveo

All I had to do was stretch the metal by expanding with a monkey wrench. It was slightly too small....but after looking at my stock mirror, I noticed that my mirror looked "stretched" too. So the mod to stretch the opening seemed correct.
