Honking noise at ~3000 rpm in 1.8T

Has anyone else had this at one time. For now the sound mainly just comes up when the car is cold. It kind of sounds like blowing air over a beer bottle. I poked around in the engine bay and saw that the braided hose that (I think) comes from the BPV into the intake mainifold was a little frayed and felt somewhat brittle. Anyway my car is a 98 with just an APR chip.

Not frayed enough to have a hole... at least I don't think so. The hose did seem kind of dry and brittle though (probably thanks to AZ summers).

If it is at 3000 rpms and part throttle your bpv is not completely sealed since the pressure on the bottom of the valve is greater then the vac side.

But at 2000rpm AND 3200 when it's really cold. Just 3200 otherwise. I'm 90% certain its a belt or belt tensioner, but it could also be the BPV.

Siberian and I were discussing this offline yesterday and many people around this time of year (i.e., cold) seem to experience the same symptoms. I am pretty sure that it is the Diverter valve. Some people (like me) experience a higher pitched whistle, some a lower coke bottle whistle, and some a honking sound. I have no idea why the condition exists. I am guessing that the rubber diaphragm in the diverter valve gets brittle in the cold weather and is prone to leaking. The air escaping through the imperfect seal creates the whistle/honk.
I am on my second valve and after replacing the 1st one, the whistle went away. Now it's back. I was debating switching to a Bailey since they do not have a diaphragm - but several guys talked me out of it due to their experiences. I think I'll try the new Bosche/TT valve - part number 06A-145-710N. At about $30, it's worth a shot. There is a TSB for the TT that recommends changing older valves for this one in the event of any 'honking' noises.
Hope this helps,
Chris
