less torque reduces the chance of slipping, also keeps the car more balanced.

Default ah ha...but does that mean they "detune" the car torque-wise? It would seem intuitive to me...

that a car producing 300-odd hp would naturally have more than 188 lb-ft of torque, no?

Yep. 2.0L limit and no turbos allowed. Short stroke high RPM engine probably.

Default Think of it this way...

A Honda S2k makes 240hp and 153lb-ft with 2 liters. A Nissan Altima makes the same 240hp, but 246lb-ft with 3.5 liters. Also, the Honda's power peak comes at a much higher rpm. You can rev the heck out of anything to make horsepower, but if you want more torque, more displacement or turbo is the way to go. Think of torque as the power and the hp as how fast you get that power. 188lb-ft/217lb-ft is pretty darn respectable for a 2 liter four banger if you think about it...

Default Check this out. It will help explain how you can have high HP with little torque

Default Low rpm torque is sacrificed to get high rpm power; ...

.
and it takes HP to accelerate. With gearing, you can get whatever torque you want to the rear wheels; but if you haven't got horsepower, you're not going to go fast.

In any case, at the same rpm, HP equals torque times a constant; i.e. it's measuring the same thing.

Or you can stroke it for more torque.
