How can I shift thru the gears on my tranny without it in the car?

How can I shift thru the gears on my tranny without it in the car?
the shifter rod on the transmission just seems to go in and out, not side to side...thoughts?

the L/R action is actually twisting the selector shaft iirc.
with the shaft halfway IN/OUT you should be able to turn the shaft clockwise/counterclockwiswe a little bit. remember that the 6" of movement you have side to side at the shifter in the car is going to be a much shorter sweep tho it will be the same number of degrees.
