Just bought a 98 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8. It only came with one key, and dealer did not know if it had remote entry/alarm or not. It's got everything else, so would seem reasonable that original owner would have got remote entry as well!

How can i tell if it's there? And if it's not, how do I go about installing it?

If you have a button that unlocks your doors, then you have remote entry, lol.

the remote locking was bundled with the sunroof option. So look at the roof of your car for a piece of glass, rectangular in shape. If you have the glass, the car came equpped with remote locking.

Key does not have buttons on it, but as very nice dimple in which my thumb snugly rests.

if you don't chances are that you have remote entry. u should of bargained your dealer for a flip key or two. mine came with 2 flip keys, and a spare key like the one you described. i now have 3 because they replaces one of the keys under warrenty and let me keep my old one =)

Ok, so i'm sitting in the A4, and i'm looking up, yes I can see the cloudy sky above me. I'm pretty sure I did not buy a convertible, and i can only see a few feet of sky. Sop i think i have this "sunroof" you talk about.

So any suggestions as to how i go about getting buttons built into my key? I could hack a few off a shirt and glue them on, but I don't think that would have the desired affect.

Then you may not have keyless entry.

I'm guessing that your two remote keys were lost/broken along the way. You're left with the 3rd key, which has no remote capabilities.

You'll need to buy a remote control (ebay or your local dealer), and you'll need to buy a key to put into the remote (can only be cut at your dealer). Once you have both, your manual should describe a process for coding the remote to work with your car.
