How can I tell when my turbo is grenading?

Default I have heard two blown turbos before, and they both sounded like that

You may have bent blade on one of the wheels. You should have that looked at.

Default They're trying to look at it...

It's just tough because the little bastard only makes noise for a few minutes at a time. I am still getting some pretty good amount of boost...if the needle hadn't FALLEN OFF my stupid boost gauge I could tell you how much Seems like a bent blade should significantly impact performance, right?

Default You would think that it would hinder performance but...

the needle didn't seem to drop off either. We thought it sounded like it could have been the turbo, and we took it to a mechanic, and he thought the same thing. Sure enough, that bad boy was pulled out and had a bent blade on the intake wheel. The same thing happened with the second turbo a few weeks later. BTW this was on a WRX not an A4.
