Default How to change the stock head unit (Delta?) in a 97 A4 ?

Finally deciding to change the radio/cassette for a CD/tuner head unit. Probably choosing an Alpine CDM 7874 for $199. But two questions:

1.
How exactly does one remove the standard radio unit? I mean, is it obvious? (my wife has the car at work currently).

2.
What is involved in wiring an aftermarket head unit to the Audi wiring?
(I assume there is a stock connector but that probably won't fit any connector on the aftermarket unit.)

I checked the archives, not much help...

Thanks all.

Default Special tools to get the deck out, the shop you buy it from may be able to lend them to you..

there is not a wiring kit that I know of, again, ask at the shop you buy the head unit from. You will need a trim plate too..

Default I did it...

I got the little metal thingies (technical term) to remove the deck from Crutchfield. www.crutchfield.com I also got a trim plate from them and my deck's nice and flushed in the dash. Looks pretty good. Br prepared for hassles though. The Audi delta deck sends line level outputs to the rear speakers. I hooked up my new deck and shazam! No rear speakers. I think there might be a way to get an adapter to go from the RCA outs of the deck to the dumb a$$ wiring harness for the Audi line level rear. I went without rear speakers for a few weeks. After that I just ran my own speaker wire into the back and bypassed the cheesy audi amp (it's that aluminum looking thing on the bottom of the driver's side rear speaker.) it took some definite trial & error to get both speakers to work with the new wiring. (i had to run new wiring to the INSIDE terminals of the passenger side rear to make it work). If I had the money, I would have just yanked out the rear speakers and threw them in the trash. Let me know if you run into troubles.

(an old car of mine...)

I will probably let Tweeter put it in for $110. Seems easier and quicker.
