Default How to compress the timing belt tensioner?

I had to remove the timing belt to get the head off. And I removed the timing belt tensioner to get it off. Now I have to put it back on but I cant get the piston in the cylinder to go back down. Does anyone know how to do this... minus removing the front end of the car? Thanx

Default use channel grips to compress or screwable clamps

better yet: replace the tensioner since that thing goes first

Default big C-clamp. I had to do that when I figured out that the TB drives the water pump on an '01

before I swapped the water pump

nervous moment there.

Default During installation...

...I found that it can be compressed by keeping the idler pully loose to give you some play and putting in the bottom tensioner bolt. Then, slip the metal part of the idler that the tensioner normally pushes on anyway in there and sort of rotate them toward each other. It's a lot harder to say than do- basically, you are just leveraging the tensioner into the proper position while installing it and the idler pulley. I have done this at least 4 times in the past two months and had no problems- the marks on the belt line up with the marks on the gears and the car runs just fine. It's the fastest and most straightforward way to do it.
