How difficult is it to manually remove and clean fuel injectors?

I just sent the injectors from my Coupe Quattro to Marren fuel injector for a complete cleaning and blueprinting. The cost is $23.75 per injector.
As for removal, I haven't removed the injectors from my A4, but removal from the Coupe was relatively painless:
- Depressurize fuel system
- Remove Spark Plug wires (to get them out of the way)
- Remove injector plugs
- Remove bolts from fuel rail
- Lift fuel rail CAREFULLY as the injectors tend to stick
- Twist and remove injectors from the fuel rail
If you don't send them off to be cleaned, at the very least, you will need to buy some new rubber gaskets for the injectors.
The best place for the gaskets is probably here:

Was not aware that injectors are not really user serviceable. Is there not some way to clean them yourself rather than sending them away for cleaning and recalibration?

I'm actually a novice myself. The reason that I didn't clean them myself is that I really don't know whether they are user servicable. I am under some time constraints, so sending them away was my best bet.
Removing them was a piece of cake, but once they were removed, it was clear that the rubber bushings on the top and bottom of the injectors would need to be replaced. The cost of these pieces alone was about $7/injector, so sending them away at a cost of $24/injector (includes new rubber) didn't seem like a bad deal. I'm very excited to get the before repost that they provide to see just how bad they really were.

Scott may know his are bad, but this was to be preventitive maintenance for myself. If it's that much work though, I'll just run some of that useless injector cleaner through a tank of gas (while running my old plugs, right before my next oil change).
