Default I've got the Dunlops on a '00 quattro. While they did "ok" in medium snow conditions...

wet, 2"-5" (that's all the snow we had that I got a chance to drive in) I didn't feel truly secure that they'd perform on a grade that I'd have to stop on and then start. The car would "pretty much" go where I'd point it but there were some slippy times. Get snows.
'00 1.8TQMSX (with snows on this weekend, going to Aspen on Friday and don't want to chance it)

Default They hold up fine, but the rest of the car will suffer damage from the curb/bus/guard rail.

The SP8000E's are pretty scary on packed snow and ice (they're a little better on powder). With quattro, you can accelerate fine, but your ABS will be going off constantly when you brake and the car will understeer easily in corners unless you go super-slow.

For a snowy region like upstate New York, I'd recommend the peace of mind offered by running real snow tires. Otherwise, you'll be living up to your handle, "SkidderAudi".

Default God this is the fourth posting on this subject - Must be late fall

Doesn't anyone scoll down to read the previous postings?

Skidder - I ran them two winters here in Colorado- only driving to and from work. I was lucky since I could drive slow and only on local streets from work to home - 5 miles. Anything more and you are asking for trouble. Expecially in NY - I was stationed at Plattsburg for two memorable winters so I know what kind of weather occurs there - you could not survive on the SP8000s.

You need dedicated snow tires - period.

Last year we had tons of S4 owners posting how they wrecked their S4 in the snow - We had posting all the way into January and February. I"ll never understand how they could have read this forum and felt that all those postings about wrecks applied others and not them (I know the S4 does not have SP8000s - but they are the same type of tire - a performace radial).

So after two winters (I was lucky because of the short distance and the local streets and the arid Colorado climate) I now have 205/55/16 Dunlop Wintersport M2s on my seven spoke sport wheels. I now have 17" wheels for the summer. There are many other good brands out there, but you definately want to have two sets of wheels.

Take the advice of everyone here - get some snow tires.

Default As Devil's advocate

I kept my Sp 8000 on 16 inch sport package wheels on. I live in MA, and last winter was fairly mild, but no problems. I never had a problem starting, even when I was plowed in with about 1 foot of snow. There are def problems stopping. I'm prob going to stay with the SP 8000 this winter as well, but just about everyone else will tell you to get snows, hehe.
