even a different compound in the outer layers of the tire (which WILL wear off with lots of street driving) The sport tires are a more block tread, no siping, no jagged tread pattern. Take look at the Michelin Arctic Alpins then the Dunlop sport tires. HUGE difference.

I felt I had no control - especially when other cars were skidding towards me. I didn't feel I could quickly get out of their way in time. Lucky for me they were able to stop or turn before hitting me.
Now with the snow tires- I feel more confident to try and steer around them instead of litting fate decide what happens. In fact they are excellent on ice. The first day I had them on I was totally unaware that the streets in Fort Collins were totally iced over. Traffic on College for some reason was going extremely slow instead of its normal morning 60mph - then I watched cars around me slide off the road. The Dunlops did not give me any clue how slippry the roads were.
So for under $600 you seem willing to risk your $30K car.

I had the SP8000's in the Massachusetts winter as well. Same experience...just "ok" but it was a MILD winter.
Ironically, a set of Dunlop Graspic DS-1's arrived today from TireRack. :-)

when it comes to avoiding accidents (quickly turning the wheel or braking) you will either spin out and or/drive the abs crazy.
Fortunatly I made it last winter, but If I drive up to Hunter or Windham fro a quick day of snowboarding..I would definatly have snow tires on.
2 cents.

I bought my 00 A4 Tqms in Jan 00. I also live in MA. Those SP5000's were horrible for stopping on snow. After almost hitting people and cars in the work parking garage. I didn't think it prudent to take the chance...
