How do you change instrument cluster bulbs on a '96 A4??

OK, had several lights out so I purchased a complete set of bulbs from the dealer. It sounded like a simple remove/replace job, but it's not and I found that the bulbs are held in place by an orange socket with two small metal clips attached on each side. I broke the first bulb trying to remove it from the socket, dug out the debris, but found the new bulb didn't seat at all and then I couldn't get the socket to re-seat in the cluster. I unscrewed a second orange socket to determine how the socket seated and couldn't get it to screw back either so I left them both out. It sounded straight-forward to me (as usual)... any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

Are these also a single bulb/base part#? Do you know the part number for these?
Also, I already put the cluster back in place before receiving this info, so does anyone know how many each of the orange and black socket bulb assemblies are needed for a full replacement in the instrument cluster?
