Default How do you know if water pump is going. Noise? Temp?

I am getting a noise in the front on the engine and was wondering how to tell if I have a water pump in my future. seems to be a much replaced item on here

Default You don't say what year. Might also be an idler or belt, etc. I wouldn't screw around waiting to

see what fails as either a pump or an idler can lead to timing belt failure which gets very expensive.

97 on the year it actually sounds more like the idler. not constant just once in a while

Default Isn't there an update idler 'kit' for the older A4's? Either way, I would get it looked into

forthwith as if it is the toothed belt tensioner and it lets loose, the damage from that gets pretty pricey.
