You can mute the V1 by pushing in on the master volume button. You can set the V1 to automute...check the website to read how (<a href="http://www.valentine1.com/lab/MikesLabRpt3.asp">click here</a>).
The ring around the volume **** allows you to set the volume of auto-muted signals or warnings that you mute yourself. <a href="http://www.valentine1.com/moreinfo/Controls.asp#2">Click here</a> to read about it.
HTH.

*sigh* Newbie, RTFM!
:-P
Outer **** is main volume, inner **** is mute volume, which is a function of main volume. Set mute **** halfway, and it will always be half loudness of main volume. Turn the mute **** to full, and it will always be the same volume as main volume.
To mute, push the big **** in, and that will mute, unless an additional bogey is detected, then you will get a series of tones at full volume indicating the presence of an addt'l bogey.
Alternatively, you could set the little "l" mode (forget the technical term valentine uses), where all low level X band signals are presented at muted volume. Once they reach a certain threshhold, they are presented at full volume. X Ka, and Laser are still presented at full volume in the little "l" mode. To change modes, push and hold the big volume **** (that will cycle between each of the three modes - L, l, A).
Now seriously, go read the manual! Don't forget to change the radar oil after every 100 hours of operation.
