Default S40 series are in the same range of A's a S70 will have to be compared to a S6/S8. and besides its a Volvo.

I do not like driving cars that you feel like sitting on a bannana box.
sorry my opinion, but they most likely are good cars.

Default A4 is a sports sedan, S70 is a touring sedan. LONG!!!!

Remember not too long ago when my uncle went to test drive the S70 AWD GLT with me (he drives an old 240 DL and I drive 1.8TQM A4). He came up with the impression that the S70 is firm enough in his opinion (of course, he's retired) and its too damn soft for me. If you are a true drivning enthuisast and want to own a Swedish automobile, get a SAAB instead (don't flame me) . If you want AWD traction and you love driving, get the A4. Both are the good cars, but depends on whethe you want a touring car or a sports sedan. The result of the test drive, my uncle is on the waiting is for the S40. Why? Even he felt the S70's chassis is getting dated!!! Here are the pros and cons of the A4 2.8Q and the S70 AWD GLT:
Pros of the A4 2.8Q:
Exceptional Quattro performance
Agile chassis and directness
Exterior and interior styling
Upgradability (compares to Volvo)
Cons:
Tight rear seats
Small trunk compares to Volvo
Pros of S70 AWD GLT:
Comfortable interior
Big trunk, bit rear seats
More comfortable ride than A4's sports package (roughly the same as non-sport)
Better low-end torque than either 1.8T or 2.8
Cons:
Dated chassis
Dated styling
IMHO, soft suspension, springs
A lot of body roll during enthuisastic driving
Tom
97 A4 1.8TQM
99 JETTA GLS 2.0

The Volvo is a bigger car, so if you carry rear seat pass, that might be an issue.
I prefer the quattro, but the Volvo system will still work quite well.
There are plenty of high-perf parts for Volvo. If you get the Turbo (high-pressure) model, 300HP is a chip and exhaust away. Brakes and suspension are also avail.
As far as SAAB is concerned, I liked the old 900 and 9000, but the company seems to be loosing it's spirit and identity since GM bought them.
Oh, unfortunately, I believe the Volvo is still only avail as a auto in this country.

Default Audi / Volvo

Speaking of both makers, is anyone watching the Bathurst 1000? Awesome race, the Volvo S40 and A4s going against each other.

Default AWD is crap.. Quattro is great..

The Volvo AWD-system sux really bad.. It doesn't have any central-diff, only a viscous-clutch! This system is only for deep snow, and not for enthusiastic driving..
Buy the S80 instead.. if you really need a Volvo..
(btw.. Saab is developing a AWD system, maybe something better than the Volvo-crap!)
