How does one determine whether CV Joint needs replacement?

Here's the deal. I had to drive my car for 1500 miles with a torn CV Boot (which I discovered on the trip) with grease leaking out. I have heard that you listen for "squeaking" sounds to determine whether you need to replace the joint or not. I don't have any squeaking sounds. I am definitely going to have the CV Boots replaced. Should I have the CV joint replaced as well or wait until there's a problem?
