How far into the hub should a front CV go?

I was recently replacing a broken front CV and got to the part where I needed to insert the CV joint / spline into the hub. I got it in as far as I could and thought the splines might not have been lining up. The axle just didn't feel like it was going into the hub enough. I compared it to the other (good) axle and about the same amount of the housing was sticking out of the hub (when looking from underneath the car). Looking into the hub (without the axle bolt in), there was about .75" of spline still showing inside the hub, is that too much? Did my axle not pull through the hub enough or is this typical?
This is my first axle I've done on a car where the axle doesn't pull all the way through the hub. All the ones I've done before used an axle nut as opposed to the bolt our Audis use.

I later realized this was a somewhat stupid question. I just popped off the ABS sensor and saw if the ring lined up with the hole it sits in. It does, question answered :P
