Default How many people are successfully using Mobil 1 75w-90 in their manual transmissions?

after recently reading the post that M1 is not gl-4 compatible it got me wondering if i should change this fluid. I'd rather not change it since i just put it in less than a year ago, but of course if it is going to hurt the transmission i will.

Hopefully it hasn't done any damage yet if it is the wrong fluid...

Default i was at the audi dealer on front st the other day and asked the parts guy about it

he said M1 is what they are told to recomend to people and that he wouldnt even bother selling me what they use there because it's twice as expensive for no reason. still not sure what i want to use now though. my 16mm triplesquare just came from ebay today though so I'm all set except for the oil

Default Even though M1 is a GL-5 fluid; it should still be safe for yellow metals.

Not all GL-5's are kind to yellow metals though.

Default It's not about yellow metal corrosion, but syncro engagment due to friction coefficient. If it shifts

if it shifts ok, you are fine. I'd say 2 year max to play it safe. Next time use something else. Royal Purple is Dual-rated GL-4&5 and seems to be a good product. I am using RedLine. fwiw, a good rule is to change the trans fluid 2x as often as diff fluid.

Default My experience (Audi A4 and Porsche 911) ---

I put in Mobil 1 75-90 in the A4 and, the first time I drove the car, I could tell something wasn't right. I started asking around without much success and finally called the Mobil 1 tech line. They said "Don't use it in the trans." I went back to the (go ahead and flame me) "real" Audi trans oil and everything is now back to normal. It was an expensive lesson. Next time, I'll spend more time looking for a different (i.e., cheaper) G-4 oil.

Years ago, I put Mobil 1 75-90 in the 911. The shifting never seemed quite right but I thought it was just the nature of the clunky old 915 transmission. When I switched to Swepco 201( a non-synthetic recommended by most of the Porsche guys) it made a world of difference. Apparently synthetic is too slippery for the synchros to work properly.

Yes, syncros need to "grab", but it's not the synthetic base oil, it's friction modifier additives
