Default Be careful with a CF hood. They do not crush on impact like the factory hood...

so in a front end collision you can imagine where that hood would end up (think passenger comparment). Most of these CF hoods for our cars are not engineered like they are for racing applications so the safety of them is unknown. Just something to think about before putting one on. cheers! Mike

Default wow... that's a completely different angle I never thought of when looking at

a CF hood. Anyone ever have some experiences in hitting someone with these things? I woulda thought it'd just crack and crumble (think of a vette hitting something)

Default While they don't crush in the same manner, they certainly do crush

They do not end up in the passenger compartment.

Default I spoke with one of the largest distributors of these street aftermaket hoods...

directly about this issue and he told me I had a good point and he would certainly look into it and get back to me. That was three months ago. Dr. Rich (neoprufrok) and myself, Dr. Mike just want to make sure these are safe for us. cheers! Mike

Default

that loading is out-of-plane to the direction of "crushing"

Default I hear ya, but wouldnt you rather see some crash testing done? I know I would.

It is obvious from the videos that this particular manufacturer is interested in making and marketing a very stron CF hood. They run a truck over it in order to show just how strong it is. Now ask yourself, "Why would I want my hood to stand up to a truck running over it?" Doesnt make much sense does it? It didnt make much sense to me either and myself and a few other docs took it upon ourselves to contact several of the manufacturers and have yet to hear back from them regarding impact safety.

Here's OEM on the same "plane"...

http://www.startupracing.com/Movies/CF/OEM.wmv</a

Default one's metal and inelastic, the other is composite of course they are gonna be different

that's the joy of CF. The question is, what happens in a head on collision. Would the hood hinge bolts shear from an increase in load? Doubt it, even with crappy metal those bolts are good for 80ksi (bla bla axial strain allowables bla bla stiffness of resin system bla ply buckling bla bla delamination bla bla fiber failure bla more engineering speak)

Real world:
Have you ever seen a race car in an accident have the hood pop up and go into the passenger compartment?

Default heh... well thanks Mike! I'll def look at a CF hood a lil differently ;)

Not that I'd plan on hitting anyone or anything... there's always that 'what if' factor
