Is it worth better acceleration times...or should it just be avoided?

Default Don't worry about the engine, but the torque converter won't appreciate it.

The transmission won't be too happy either.

This is one of those things that has a cumulative effect. Torque braking puts a lot of stress on the whole power train and heats up the transmission fluid quickly.

Doing it once in a blue moon probably will not do much damage but if it's a regular practice, plan on high repair costs. This should help to decide whether it's "worth it."
