How much should I expect to pay for my rear brakes and rotors to be replaced? The dealer is asking almost $500 for the job. I have a '98.5 A4 2.8Q.

locally. Itll more than likely be cheaper than the dealer.

Its going to be pretty costly as the rear brakes arent that easily replaced.

$500 is a ripoff. My dealer did a bunch of services to my car, and they did not even charge me any additional labor to install the rear pads & rotors (I brought my own parts). Total cost for that visit was $150 -- INCLUDING all the other stuff they did on my car.

A set of Mintex Red Box pads are about $40 for the rears. And OEM rotors are $28 from ECS Tuning.

Actually if you have the Lisle rear brake tool, the job is pretty easy (or so I am told, since I never actually did it myself.)
