Default How much will a warranty to 100k save me?

I had a 96 A4 that was, shall we say, expensive to maintain for me and the previous owner. Oil leaks, control arms, evaporator you know the whole deal. A good bit more maintenance than my wife's old 95 A6 which was rock solid. Anyway, we're looking at a 99 1.8 with 74k on the clock. It has Audi assured to 100k. I seem to remember that most German cars get pretty expensive in the 80-120k range and then you're good another 80 or 100k more. Has that been everybody's experience? I'm a little hesitant to get a car with this many miles, but if all the expensive stuff is between here and 100k, the warranty might take care of getting the car ready for the next 100k. Of course, I'd have to deal with the dealer but I can do that if I have to. I assume 99s have the typical control arm, wheel bearing failures and other issues. And just to verify, I'm talking here about repairs. I know about the timing belt maintenance and I know that needs to be done if it hasn't been and it's going to be expensive. Regular maintenance never bothers me, it's the expensive repairs that get annoying...

Default Not to be a smartass, but obviously, it really depends on what breaks

You could get lucky, or it could be a real lemon. Do you have any idea of how the previous owner treated/maintained the car? How much more is the Audi assured car than a comparable one without the warranty?

Default Keep in mind one thing ...

Companies are offering these warranties for one reason - they are making money on them. And if they are making money, chances are you will be losing money, because you're supporting them.

Default my 3rd party warranty has thus far saved me $4K over the life of my purchase (2 years: 44K to 63K)

which is twice the cost of the warranty.

Obviously, I just didn't know if there were a lot of typical failures in the 80-100k range.

Default Yea, but the previuos owner already paid for Audi Assured ...

And last time I brought an Audi assured it was only $300 for the warranty on an A6. It may have gone up, but at that price Audi is losing a lot of money.
