Its usually about 150-200 per wheel, depending on where you go

Default Usually, you refinish the ENTIRE wheel, not part of it.

There is no way for them to strip and refinish a localized area of the wheel. Saturnine is right about cost...my guess would have been about $600 for the set.

So it isn't possible to just refinish/repolish the lip of the rim?

Default BS...

You can always have them repolish the lip. What they do is they mount your tire and rim on a machine and they turn it until they remove the scratches in the first bead. After they turn it it will be polished like brand new. But, it won't have the clear coat on that area. You just have to make sure you keep it up with some polish once in a while.

Default True, but that applies to rims that are polished, not clearcoated.

Very few rims are polished and not clearcoated. The reason being, maintenance is a PITA with bare polished aluminum. As you pointed out, once clearcoat is involved, you end up refinishing the entire rim, if you want it to come out nice.

I would also imagine that using the technique you describe would require that the initial damage to the rim be very minor. There is a limit to how much of the lip you can trim down, without weakening it.
