Default How to remove rear Rotors on my 98 A4Q ????

I am doing my brakes on my 98 1.8TQ and I can't find the process in my Robert B Manual.
I have to replace the rear rotors due to they are bad.

It seems to have a large allen nut in the center of the hub. Do I take it off??? What size is it ???

Thanks
Rob

Default No you don't . Just pull. That large allen actually holds the hub to the axle. You probably wouldn't

be able to get it out by hand anyway..

The rotors just sit on the hub.

Default No you don't. rklutts is on the right track. Taking off the small 13mm bolts will only...

allow you to take off the pads, but the caliper bracket will still be in place, and you will not be able to angle the rotor out of there.

You need a 5.5 or 6 allen (I can't remember, but you buy them in a set anyway) to remove those two caliper bolts as shown here in the picture. Once caliper is out, rotor will fall off just like taking off the 2 17mm caliper bolts for the front ones.

Default rklutts said that he already removed that. If you re-read his post,(edit:add pic)

he said that he removed the caliper AND the mount, which is what you show being unbolted. He was referring to the allen bolt in the center of the hub, I guess he thought that it held the rotor to the hub.

Obviously you have to remove the caliper and the carrier before you can remove the rotor.

if you have the caliper and arbor off, just hit the rotor,it's rusted on.don't remove th 17mm allen in the center.you will destroy the wheel bearing

Default Exactly. Once you get the caliper carrier removed, the rotor will be free, but may need some..

persuasion to get free from the hub.

Incidentally, VWs use a set screw to keep the rotor on the hub. While nice in that it keeps the lug holes lined up when you take off a tire, it becomes a major PITA when it comes time to replace the rotors.

Default Should add to above in saying DO NOT remove the large bolt in the center of the hub..

Just incase that message was lost in the confusion.
