Default Howling noise on 99.5t with tip and quattro

Yes i have already read Tom Fric FAQ.
Tom's FAQ sounds similar to my problem, but my
car is a 99.5t,with tiptronic, not a manual
transmission. The howling noise does occur between
2000 and 3000 rpm at moderate acceleration,but
does not go away until i get above 70 kilometres
per hour. The big problem is,it will not always
make this noise.
The service manager and a mechanic at my local
Audi dealer have heard this noise. They thought it
might be the transmission.I booked the car in for
a week, but they could not get the noise to re-
occure. They say they cannot do any thing more for
now. They will check with Audi (Jan/14/00).
The noise has continued off and on since the
above date, and i have taken the car in again, but
the noise did not stay.
This howling noise is embarrassing when friends
are in the car.
I do love my A4. Someone please help.

I'm the Tom that wrote that FAQ. A couple of questions that may help diagnose it... Does it occur in every or most gears? Does it occur in neutral? I don't know what your climate is, but does it occur only at certain ambient temperatures? Do you feel any vibrations during the howling? Can you pinpoint what portion of the car it is coming from? I'll try to help.

I live in Southwestern Ontario Canada. Got the car in May 1999. The noise didnt start until the weather got colder in November & December. Some days the car markes the noise when it is -2.5 degrees celsius but doesn't make it at -23 degrees celsius!! Once the car warms up to 90 degrees celsius, the noise seems to go away. No vibrations at all - the car is smooth!!! When I let off the gas the noise continues until I get below 2000 rpm. It does occur in most gears as long as it is between 50kmh and 70kmh or between 2000 and 3000 rpm. If you "gun" the car or make the turbo kick in you cant hear the noise.
