That's what I did. So technically, the old lights will go in. I don't think the mount will be as stable as the new lights once you alter the fenders. But, the real show stopper is the wiring. I cut the connectors off of my old lights, and soldered them to the new lights, so that the new lights are plug-and-play with the car.
Why would you want to swap the lights back? Assuming you would do this when you buy a new car, the new car will almost certainly have projector lights. Are you thinking you might be able to sell your projectors when they are n-years old? If so, I don't think you'll find a buyer or get much for them. I'd say make the change and plan on it being permanent.
