We send back our old ones to AOA for remanufacturing. I think the only reused parts might be the cast aluminum housing and possibly the shaft. As for reliability, there is no major risk that I can ascertain from my years of experience with reman pumps. There is no appreciably higher failure rate that I've taken notice of. With that said... I put new ones in my own cars because the difference in price is very minimal... for me it was $3 more for a new pump over a reman on the 078-121-006 /006x pump.
If its an OEM reman I would be able to sleep well at night, if its mystery brand... I'd worry. Try to remember that if the OEM pump fails and takes the engine with it and it was done at a dealer... audi gets to pay to fix what that pump fvcked up when it took a shyt.

I'm running a remanufactured w/p that was replaced by the dealer under warranty. See Qfrog's post.
If I had a choice, I'd go with a new Hepu with a metal impeller. In fact, I bought a Hepu pump instead of OEM for when I replace my belt and pump this Spring.
There is really no difference between OEM new vs. the OEM reman. Both have the plastic impeller, and both are factory parts. The reman has an 'X' at the end of the part #, iirc.
