Default I give up, what does a downpipe do?!?!

I'm mainly looking at the Milltek exhaust (unless you guys can recommend some others) but what performance does the downpipe actually give me? Could I live without it? or does it really boost performance?

Basically a short explanation of what it does would be great!

Default The smallest pipe syndrome..

You can have a big 3" exhaust, but if you have a restrictive stock downpipe you're still blowin through a small straw...

So yes, it does improve performance, and probably lowers EGT on the turbo which is a good thing when your overworking the poor k03.

Default So.....

Okay...

So I'm thinking to myself...

If you don't have a downpipe, then that's bad... right?

Since a regular 'ol exhaust system - downpipe is just from the engine manifold to the muffler, but the downpipe takes the exhaust from the turbo + engine to the muffler?

or am I completely messed up in that thinking?

Default Oh gotcha...

So basically make sure ALL your pipe are pushing the same amount of air down the same space to speed up the "sucking in" and "blowing out" cycle?

Oh man that's a bad analogy but I finally get what you guys mean. :-)

Default the air has to go through all the pipes.....

so if one is bottlenecking the airflow, then it's getting bottlenecked no matter how large the other pipes are...
