i got to take a spin on a 2002 a6 3.0 with cvt.
its nice. its smooth, but the steering is too soft. but what i liked was the cvt. it seems like one long gear, but the tricky part is, its sooo smooth. i'll drive the cvt, but not an a6.

it essentially is one long gear
or essentially a quasi-infinite amount of really short gears... however you want to look at it

I haven't driven a 3.0 yet but all the A6's I've driven have really overboosted steering...
Including the 2.7T loaner I got the last time I was in. Loaner before that was a 4.2 A6.
I understand why A6 owners remove that Servotronic fuse. There steering was way too light. Other than that I like the A6's roomy interior. An A6 CVT could well be my next car (provided it's got Quattro by then).
