I have been using 1191 NAPA gold oil filter for long time. Meets bypass specs, etc. for 2.8 30V AHA

Default LOL. Your assumptions are correct - most of them anyway.

I buy NAPA oil, but generally buy Mann filters in bulk. If I'm short, I'll do a NAPA filter, and the non-VAG stuff gets NAPA filters.

it can't hurt, though, right? extra filter element and more oil capacity.

Default yes. 25-33 is what I've read here. it's why I wouldn't use the M1 filter that has low bypass. Read:

Default I don't even like the up-sized filer on 1.8t in all cases...

Taking longer to warm the oil could present more harm than the good of extra capacity in a short-tripper, if changed on-time.

Default There is actually a mid-sized filter too, a shorty fat one. My BOSCH #3500 imploded, fwiw...

I'll post some pics later, but yeah. I know of the mid-sized from leafing through the BOSCH filer apps at AutoZone. It's short, like 5"x 5".
Figure any Audi filter works on any Audi anyway...threads and BPV are the same, forget about 30 vs 30 psi. Engines filters bypass not just from being clogged media, but from overpressure from thick cold oil. See my other posts in the thread.

isn't that the point of 0w and 5w oil? cold. is another ~1/2 qt really going to do much either way?

Default My thinking is that lower bypass will provide much better flow. Flow cools bearing journals, etc.

Could be a decent race mod, srsly. The Motorcraft FL-1s or 820s is super-good w/speced silicone adbv.

Default Thinner oil on start is always better.If+1/2q can prevent sludge on the hot end, why not minus 1/2q?

All oil is super-thick at ambient compared to OP temp.

yes, I do believe oil temp differences vary in a NON-Linear fashion compared to volume carrying a thermal load.

Can it make sludge if it does not warm up a few percent? Well...can it prevent sludge if it's bigger and not excessively warm? I think it's the exact thermaldynamic question in reverse and afaik, some Audi engineers say there is a difference.

Am I specualting, yeah. When I am going into theory vs practice and observation, I'll say so and this is theory.
