Clay removes surfaces grit, not swirl marks. Use a swirl removing polish, like the 3M, or Meguiars Swirl Remover. Follow that up with a good coat of wax.

Best bet would be to get your hands on a random orbit polisher. It will be much more effective at polishing the clearcoat to remove the swirls. The make different pads for the porter cable I have (available through Meguires), depending on how bad the swirls are. Also, 3M makes several different polishing compounds as well.
...or you could just go to a detailer that's good with a buffer, and get them to clean up the paint for you.

I, too, have a 98.5 2.8QMS, and it worked wonders for my black paint. 3M swirl mark remover, followed by 3M Imperial hand glaze, topped off by 1000 Grand Blitz wax. The result was smooth, deep, glossy, wet-looking paint. I guage the swirl mark remover's effectiveness at about 90%. Be sure to strip off the existing wax first . . .
