Default yea, maybe

I went thru the same thing.
Took off rear bumper, ran a speedometer cable thru the tubes. I did not see that I 'cleared' anything...but my C-pillars have been OK ever since.
I found that the C-pillars clean up pretty easily (dampen them, use carpet cleaner <test an area first to ensure it does not discolor>, let dry, reinstall).
So even if you clean them every few years - no big deal.
My writeup is in the tech section.

I've never had this issue (yet), but I've also never heard of something else being the cause.

Default Dealer replaced 2 C-pillar covers under the thought that

the covers were manufactured with too much glue...there was a TSB related to this at some point, but not necessarily for the A4.

After they replaced it twice, they looked elsewhere.

Under warrantee, they dropped my headliner and did a water test, found a small leak in the water channel / conduit...they never really explained it well. I assume they were they were referring to the sunroof drain tube. It was fine for a few years, then I had water stains again. After I did the last drain clean, it has been fine (about 2 years now)

So there is some history for you.
