I'm really new to working on my Audi, but i just finished replacing my rear shelf speakers on my 1999 A4. I followed the instructions listed in this forum under the heading 'better bass responce from BOSE speakers' or something like that. At any rate, i bought the two new speaks from Part Express.com. They were these cheap off-brand company. They were only about $19 buck each after tax, so i didn't expect very much.
These speakers had a magnet MUCH larger than the BOSE, so i expected them to sound much better as well. Although they have a tighter sound, in the end i have to say the BOSE blew them away (before the BOSE blew away themselves that is). The BOSE have a much richer bass response and are much louder. At any rate, even these speakers sound much better than the broken BOSE. I guess too much sunlight deteriorated the thin layer of poly(somthing) that connected the cheap paper cone to the metal frame.
In the end, I had to break the plastic white tags that held the rear shelf to the car. Can anyone tell me how to replace these? The shelf is in place, but only because it's such a tight fit between itself and the car.
In the future, i think i'll avoid any car that advertizes a BOSE stereo as an upgrade. I'd rather do it myself aftermarket. With this BOSE crap, you really don't get what your paying for. And, you're locked into a proprietary solution with the fittings and the parts.
