Im partial to the older stuff, but thats only because I know them very well and they are quite easy to work on and maintain. Parts are NOT as expensive as some think. Lots of parts are available online, and yes, some parts are becoming hard to come by (Urq parts for sure). CIS is very simple and reliable when it runs right, and can be tricky to work on if you arent familiar with how it works and the silly sensors it uses.
Been around those cars since 1999 and I love them, but they arent for everybody. It really boils down to the type of car you want.
If you wanted a beater, get an old 4kq, they are tanks in the snow, very reliable and dont put up much of a fuss.
I tossed a 10vt motor into my 4kq, its the easiest swap to do and will net you 100 extra hp with the stock turbo, chipped ECU and a stiffer wastegate spring. You could go more aggressive with EFI or even a 20vt set up. Just comes down to what you are looking for.
Just my experience with working on the older, more basic gen quattro cars

The CQ is nice & has unique shape, good in the snow. Better in the wet then a 4kq (because of gen II quat, torsen).
Problem w/ either is they seem to be getting harder to find in good condition.
An alternative to the CQ is the '90-'91 90q, same 20v engine & drivetrain as a CQ, but easier to find.
Let me know if you want any further info on the older models.
Also wife says thin the fleet if interested in something from it
