Default I need your help and advice regarding repair shop damage!!!!!

I took my car to a local repair shop this morning to get my A/C filledup. When they went to fill it up via the high side, the high side nipple broke off - or this is what they said. They said the fitting was already cracked which caused the whole thing to snap off when they were filling it. I believed them until I took a close look and saw the break. It looks clean all the way around. I see no evidence of a pre-existing crack. Take a look at the pics and let me know if the shop is BS'ing me. Also, is this a common problem? Thanks

Don't they leak test AC systems before they recharge?

Default I would find out if they are required to test the system. I don't think you can just...

pump refrigerant into a system without testing it first. There might be EPA requirements which they did not follow. If there was an existing crack that was bad enough to snap off, it must have been leaking.

Default "They said the fitting was already cracked which caused ... to snap off when they were filling it"

If they knew the system had a leak or crack, they had no business filling it with refridgerant.

Default Very good point - I just called the place back and of course - the owner isn't there.

I've got to wait an hour before I call back.

Default I would say they are at fault

Especially because it is the ac system and it must be closed for them to recharge it. It is a major fine to release the chemical into the air so I would expect them to have to leak test the system before putting any additional in. Usually if it looks like something may break a shop will ask you if you want them to try to do the work.

Default see if a muffler place would weld it back on

that is if the shop doesn't pay to replace it.
