Default I now know why display pixels are dying, and the answer was right there all along

From Bentley:
GR-01, Electrical Equipment, 01 On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

Instrument cluster, On Board Diagnostic (OBD) (through M.Y. 1999)

vs

Instrument cluster with long service life, On Board Diagnostic (OBD) (from m.y. 2000)

See? 99.5 and before had a short service life clusters by design

Lol... I'm hiding my sarcasm well. Still, I wonder why it's worded so in Bentley

It's not short by design, it was upgraded?IF I buy a new one, I'll leave it off except to check data

Default $50 on Ebay with the center trip computer.

and the dealer..I have no idea what they charge for the cluster. I asked in 97 and they told me $1200..but I think they were pulling my leg.

Default I have 9 years on mine...knock on wood of course...

not all the early ones are defective. The digital center trip display became availlable in 1996 as an option on the new 97 model Audi cars. I have had people try to tell me that the digital trip computer did not exist in 97. It did as a $250 dollar option and some of the early release 97's had it..like mine. The reasons why I believe my display has lasted so long are two things:
1. I never change the display brightness. That is a known problem of VW/Audi clusters. They have had that problem from the early 80's on. Changing the brightness can kill it. I've seen it happen twice already for that reason.
2. I only use the digital trip computer to get quick readings, otherwise it is turned off most of the time. I have done this from day one because the computer simply annoys me while driving.
