Default I switched to the new large OEM filter, my oil temps are noticeably lower..

keep in mind i have the S4 oil cooler and k04 as well,

small filter + s4 oil cooler + m1 5w-40 = peak oil temp at about 212-215F

large filter + S4 oil cooler + m1 5w-40 = peak oil temp at about 205-208F

oil capacity is around 4.5 quarts.

Good to know. I'll be switching both cars to the larger filter this weekend.

Through about 4 changes with the big filter, I have used exactly 4.25 quarts each time.

Default I've been using the Purolator/Mann (L4016?)

and it's been 4.5 in and out. I noticed quite a differnce in oil temps.

Default I wouldn't think that makes any difference

seeing how temps compare on a hot day after beating on the car would me more interesting.

I thought I was seeing cooler temps on my car, but I switched from the updated OEM filter to the smaller NAPA filter 2 weeks ago and my tamps appear the same. Although I haven't read them from the VAG, only the gauge where it's tough to read with precision. I am around 215 degrees cruising with a WOT run here and there. OEM oil cooler and GT28RS @ 15 psi.
