I think the "Miles until Gas Tank is Empty" feature display on my A4 is a bit pessimistic...

... Anyone else noticed this on the 2000 models? I fill the tank from empty a lot and can never put in more than 15 gallons of fuel. Yesterday I took a gamble and drove 17.5 **gulp** miles past "0 Miles". When I filled the tank, it only took 14.9 gallons??? For me this equals to about 45-50 miles of fuel left after the "0 miles" is displayed. My only reasoning is that Audi must have been pessimistically thinking of the Autobahn, as you can be fined for running out of fuel on the Autobahn.

On my 2001, once the computer shows 0, there's still some fuel left. I wasn't brave enough to find out exactly how much, though ![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Since "miles to empty" is only an estimate, I believe Audi wanted to be on the safe side, and took a "pessimistic" approach, as you call it. It's better to find out that you had more gas than you expected, rather then the other way around.
On another note, I am not 100% sure what is the exact capacity of my fuel tank. I've heard different answers, such as 15.6, 15.9, 16.4. Which one is correct for a 1.8TQ?

and need we bring up the problems with the A6s back in 1999 when the cars would run out of gas when it said you still had miles to go?

of course, the amount of gas left in the tank. What I don't know is how the computer is able to detrmine the exact amount of fuel left in the tank. This is, where I think, the readout turns into more of an estimate rather than exact science.

The problem was actually the sender unit, and Audi initiated a recall to replace all the faulty ones. I believe the lawsuit went nowhere.
