I think the "Miles until Gas Tank is Empty" feature display on my A4 is a bit pessimistic...

vague in the description. I have found this to be true however as I've driven up to 40 miles after "`0 miles" remaining and then felt hesitation on hard acceleration (ie, I'm about out of gas)

at that point, my "miles to empty" display shows about 35-40 miles remaining.

And thus I have no more feel for how far I've gone. So, what I typically do is pay attention to how many miles I have on my trip odometer when it hits "0 Miles" and then add 40. If I drive conservative, that's the max, anything more aggressive, and I better grab that next station.
ie 248 miles on the trip odometer when it hits "0 Miles" remaining, so I keep 288 in my head, and then watch that

based on that, it calculates how many miles you have left based on the amount of gas left. Most people, when getting close to empty, drive more conservative and thus this first instance of "miles remaining" is high. The trip computer uses your driving MPG over the last 20 miles to calculate what you'll do for the rest of the tank, and thus how the "Miles remaining" will fluxuate throughout a tank
