Strange. I've never had a check engine light in the A4.

Default Might be a thermostat problem or something......

It might be temperature related since it happens when cold. I wonder if your thermostat isn't operating properly, and prohibits the engine from warming up?

Only way to tell is to hook it up to the vag tool at the dealer (or from somebody nearby who has one).

Default Put a piece of black tape over it.

It'll never come on again.

Sounds like a temp. sensor problem; have someone VAG it to find out what it is.

Default I had my Coolant Temp Sensor go, only way to find out is a VAG tool.......

you have to get the codes to identify, and my coolant temp sensor would light up the check engine light due to the motor thinking it was warmer than it really was.

Do you, or have you had any "rough" starts of the engine in the morning?? I did, no choke due to it thinking it was warmed up already.

If you have these symptoms it is the Coolant Sensor.

hope this helps!

Let me guess : 2.8 V6, high miles ?? : probably a clogged EGR feed passage in the intake manifold.
