Will the computer "learn" by itself while the car is being driven?
I didn't know it was possible to adjust the idle with a VAG-COM. So far the pros told me there was no way to adjust it! Then again, they couldn't find where that vac hose was supposed to go either.
Now, get some sleep... ;-)

with the engine not on and let it set for around 10 minutes (I don't remember how long though).
This method has been posted a lot and may be ONLY for the 30v engine with the different ECU because I have never sucessfully done this (also the Bentley Repair manual says it works for the Motronic ECU, which we have the Hitachi ECU). You're supposed to be able to hear the throttle opening and closing. I think there is a way to do this using the VAG-COM, but I've never tried it.
To do the adapatation to adjust the idle position, you need a VAG-COM tool.
If I find the information on how to do this I can post it. I think the Bentley CD has it all.

I had this same problem with my '96 A4 2.8 Quattro. Seems hard to believe, but I just changed my air filter and the problem disappeared and the CEL went out! The change was instant so I know it was a direct cause and effect. It idles at 700-750 with the AC compressor off and about 950 with it on.
"Eventually the idle speed began randomly "dipping" all the way to 0 and the car would usually stall or sometimes recover (after all the idiot lights came on!). That trend increased to a point when the car would stall as soon as I got of the gas. As I said, it did that randomly. Sometimes the car would idle just fine."
