I'd have to agree that the "rice" term has gotten way out of hand. Soon as you mention exhaust, larger wheels, or any type of modification to a car with a "4 banger!!!111" somebody typically starts throwing out rice comments.

In regards to this particular situation I have removed my factory resonator, have 2.5" pipe back from the downpipe, I have a dynomax race muffler (straight through 3" design) inline and then a Hayame dual-tip straight through muffler at the rear and I have no sound characteristics of a typical honda with no resonator. It's very deep, not overly loud, and it sounds great in general.

Also, keep in mind comparing a non-turbo car (such as the civic SI) with a 1.8t A4 is a completely different area as well, as the turbo mellows out the exhaust quite a bit.
