Default IMO, rotors last forever as long as the braked aren't metal on metal

This whole BS about replacing the rotors is wrong and probably only advocated by stealerships. That is unless the pad is completely worn out and started rubbing the rotor w/ the metal. In that case, the rotors would be shot.

Default Yes and no.... Depends

If you are replacing them yourself like a real audi geek, then yea just do em at the same time.

Audi doesnt reccomend re-surfacing their rotors.
Rotors arent that expensive if you stay away from the stealership.

Rotors warp and they do wear, Would you like to explain to me the rust edge on my OEM ones?

Default There is a very simple way to check...

you can mic the rotors, and compare them to min. spec. You've got an older car...surely you've replaced the pads by now. What was the thickness on your rotors compared to min and new spec. when you changed the pads?

At a bare minimum, rotors should be resurfaced when installing new pads...but once again, if you resurface them, and fall below min. spec, you'll need to replace them.

Rust is the oxidation of iron. What does that have to do with rotor warp or wear?

Default Obviously...

Rust is iron oxide (oxidation of iron and NOT of water), which forms on the surface of the rotors. Where the brake pads remove the iron oxide(tohether with some metal), the rotor will be nice and shiny until it rusts again. The pads don't touch the rotor at the very edge, and a rusty ridge forms there. That ridge makes it very obvious that the rotors wear. You don't even have to measure the thickness of the rotors to see that they get thinner and thinner. That edge is one of the reasons why rotors should be resurfaced each time you change the pads.
