If a timing belt tensioner breaks when all valves are closed will there still be damage?

If a timing belt tensioner breaks when all valves are closed will there still be damage?

Default no. provided the engine doesnt make a full revolution after that.

and the valves stay up. that is unlikely.

Default It's pretty unlikely that it will break, though...

It'll just skip enough teeth to ruin your day.

Default No, but the motor and camshafts don't stop rotating because of the built up inertia...

.. so the valves are almost certainly gonna hit the pistons.

I didn't say timing belt, tensioner will break causing timing belt to skip

Default My timing belt tensioner went when my g/f was driving and she made it home.. and

got it towed to the dealer the next day..
no damage.. covered under waranty and replaced the full package of timing belt/water pump/tensioner.. the tensioner is covered under warranty but the belt isnt.. go figure
