Default I picked up an '06 S2000 today as a matter of fact....

Bad news; I sold my '00 A4 to a friend who was really interested in it, and after 107K miles, I figured it was time to let go.

Today I picked up my Dad's S2000....he never drives it and offered to me while I figure out what my next car will be. It has 1 year left on the lease, so I will drive it for 6 months to a year and spend that time figuring out what I want to buy. So far I really want an A5, but $40K for a car with no maitenance program and no xenons is a deal breaker for me. I am eyeing the 328 coupe....not bad for $35K.

Default in my opnion the lack of flashy interior suits the car well

as I find the driving experience raw. I think the AP2 04 and later models have a little more to them on the interior side. These cars come from the less is more approach as far as features go. To me the biggest negative is the stereo and how hard it is to hear on the highway with the top down. That can easily upgraded for a few bucks. Personally I could hardly call the car soulless....the motor is about as good as it gets for an NA 2.0 (even handles up to 10 psi boost well), the tranny is great and the chasis is very stiff.

Default All 185 pounds of her......

EJ22 n/a boxer from a 1994 Subaru Legacy. Non-interference design 16-valve motor. I love this engine.

Will have stock pistons with ceramic dome coat and moly-coated side skirts for that little tiny extra something.

Heads will be reconditioned (three angle valve job), ported and polished.

.

Here's one I refreshed (new seals, idlers, accessories) and put in my Vanagon.

Stock rating is 135 horsepower and 137 ft/lb torque at 4400 rpm.......screamer ( I'm rolling my eyes). It's a very strong design; only it's turbo closed-deck EJ22T brother is stronger. Too bad the owner of the car this engine was in chose to drive it constantly low on oil and slowly cooked it to death. I'm splitting the case this week and expect to find trashed main bearings but I'm hoping the crankshaft is o.k...... there are metal shavings in the oil pickup screen so something was damaged in the shortblock.

Once rebuilt, this will go in a yet-to-be-found 1974 Porsche 914. At roughly 2,250 pounds with the driver, it will result in a very good power-to-weight ratio. This will be my track car.

I can't wait....

Default I don't want flashy... but something nice at least... like the B5 A4....

the current design just looks/feels so cheap. However, I can't argue with the abilities of that car... so I won't.

Default I guess to each his own

I think the car does catch looks....especially with the oem front lip and trunk spoiler. I think the lines are aggressive. Comparing the styling to the B5 is a tough one. The B5 is an older and is still very appealing. Have you driven one?

Default I like the exterior a lot.. I'm talking about the interior only....

haven't driven one. At the Honda dealership the manager asked if I wanted to test drive it but I declined... I didn't want to be tempted... lol

Why not buy or build something a bit more potent for the 914?

Default Several reasons...

1. Training

This engine will allow me to learn how to drive the car at a safe limit. It will also "push" me to carrying maximum speed in the corners since it won't have that much torque powering out. In other words, I'll never be able use high power as a crutch in the beginning. This should be a good thing

2. At 135 horsepower and 137 ft/lbs torque it's still twenty percent more potent than the six cylinder motor (the most powerful engine option) Porsche designed for the 914 thirty years ago. That motor is considered fantastic for the 914 so the EJ22 should be even better. I'm expecting a 0-60 mph time around 6.5 seconds. Anything less will be a bonus.

3. It was free. The boys at The Buslab (Vanagons, Bay Window buses)in Berkeley were going to recycle it so I took it off their hands.

4. I'm in love with Subaru boxer engines so I felt bad for this one tossed in a corner covered in oil. If I could make love to it, I would... which apparently is socially acceptable in the U.K.

5. When I outgrow this engine I'll install one of the following: EJ25 (2.5 liter @ 165 horsepower) or an H6 EG30 (compact 3.0 liter @ 212 horsepower)... because they're Subarus I can simply swap them in using the same mounts and cooling setup.

6. In California, due to CARB (California Air Resource Board) restrictions, the EJ22 is the only Subaru engine officially recognized by the State of California for transplanting into a Vanagon via an Executive Order. I can pull this engine and sell it to a Vanagon conversion candidate.... no problem.

7. I may start a business rebuilding EJ22 motors for the conversion community so this is just that much more practice/experience.
