Default I'm really getting tired of the tranny issues. is it normal for the car to be able to drift

backwards while in gear?

My driveway is on a slight slope backwards. I parked it the other day only in gear and it wouldn't stay put. It felt as if it would just slip, drift back, slip, drift back, slip, drift back...and wouldn't stop. It didn't make any noises, just slip.

wtf?

Default !!! OMG, RUN, do NOT walk to the nearest Porsche dealer NOW!! Your Trans is JUNK!!

Happy? :-) Original post left for searchers. All 2 of them.

?? What gear was it in? Parking brake on? You were seeing the effects of low compression..

the car was actually turning the engine through the gearbox. In any gear but 1st, and even that's questionable on a steep-ish slope, the engine is not going to hold the car there. It's not like an automatic where tehre is a locking device. The only thing holding your car there is the engine's compression.

Default Wow, so the 500 manual trans cars I've driven have been faulty?

Good to know. Thanks Kris.

Sorry, I parked my A4 (have you owned an A4 1.8T by the way?) on a slope every single day of its existence and I only used first gear, no e-brake, and the car never budged.

Default No, but you must not have been on much of a slope. My GTI would not stay put on any hill in 1st..

it would just slowly chug backwards unless the brake was on. Go find a nice slope, one which the car will easily roll on it's own in neutral. Put it in 1st, or 2nd for kicks, and see how well it holds.

Why are you so defensive and agressive? Take a pill or something.

Default I think 3rd. I often just push straight up with the ebrake on. But, in the winter, I tend to not

use the ebrake. looks like I'll never forget the ebrake.

Default It's nothing to really worry about, unless even in 1st, it would just chug chug backwards.

This has nothing to do with the gearbox either. It's just the engine turning.

25 degrees or so. Jeff said "slight slope," so I doubt it was a 45 degree angle in his case.
