Default Instrument Cluster Replacing

For those of you who've experience Instrument Cluster LCDs going bad, here is an alternative solution to the expensive dealership route.

My sister's 2000 A4 Instrument cluster's Trip LCD became unreadable. After doing research, I found a used S4 cluster on Ebay that was compatible. The S4 cluster had 20k miles on it, so the mileage could not be program. The mileage is stored on an EEProm chip in the Instrument cluster. After locating and swapping out the EEProms, I was good to go. The S4 cluster worked perfectly, and the mileage was preserved. Others mentioned that the RPM info had to be changed from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder in the cluster, but when I checked the S4 cluster, it was already set to 4 cylinders (that info is either in the EEProm or someone already changed it).

If you want the location of the EEProm chip, just do a search, I put up a pic of it in another post.

While taking apart the Instrument Cluster, I noticed that the LCD probably could be replaced to fix the problem. It would just require a little more research to find the part #.

Default really awesome. The EEPROM was a topic I asked about not too long ago. I have a bad dimmer

and buying a used cluster is pointless unless the EEPROM can be swapped. Now we know it can!!!

So did you have to solder to swap the EEPROM or is it socketed?

Default Solder swap. If anyone tries this, make sure they have someone experienced do it. You don't want to

ruin the pads or part.
