Hey all, newcomer to message board, well i graduated from college and buying my first car. Excited to say it's PROBABLY going to be an A4. I actually was positive until I spoke with my parent's insurance agent. I'm moving to CA, 22/M, I just got quoted for insurance on a 2001 1.8TQ and I almost fainted. $1200/6mo! (that's with a clean record!!) How the hell do you all afford this?? Are you paying just as much as I'm going to. Hmmmm...do i have to buy a different car? NNNOOOOOO!!!! I hate CA insurance laws. I'm from midwest and we have no-fault insurance. Any encouraging stories out there!?!

The 96 Audi A4 has a rating of 17. This rating is established by some national insurance board and is the same for every insurance company. This 'board' wrecks cars at 35 mph and then fixes them. The board then assigns a number to each car based on how expensive it is to fix that particular car. This number drops as the car ages because the value goes down and it becomes cheaper to 'total' the car. Audi parts are very expensive and so it gets a high number. This number is *not* related to HP/Weight ratio of the car.
Other numbers off the top of my head: 95 Jetta 15, Corvette 14.
Yes, I hate insurance companies too. I'm lucky to have a premium insurance company. I pay $425 per 6 months for full coverage with $1k deductibles on a 96' A4. I live in a low population area and have a clean record.
It sucks that you have no choice but to bend over and take it. Until you are 25 and married, but then you have house insurance. It never ends!!!

State farm had the nerve to quote my parents and I (I pay around half of my car costs) $6000 a year! No way! Progressive is more kind to us young people and I now pay $3900 (clean record) a year. Not to bad considering a friend of mine, who drives a real loaded Honda Accord pays $3600 (clean record)a year. I also got "the good student discount (GPA of 3.0 or higher which I have). Still sucks to pay that much for a benefit you never see until the day you have an accident and slam into that car at the intersection!

I just ordered a 01 avant 1.8T and the intial quote from my agent was $1160/6 mos. ... I have to talk to the agent some more and see what I can do. I will be 23 in march, and have 2 or 3 speeding tickets still on my record (my agent rolls them off after 3 years) and countless tickets that I have gotten out of (even if you get out of the ticket in court, it still flags on many insurance computers)
