Default it's not really overboard........

a standard cone setup is less restrictive....but it also allows more hot air from the engine bay to be sucked into the engine, which is bad. Hot air will negate the benefits of the free-er flowing cone, and can even make performance worse.

The heatshielding I performed gets rid of the hot air problem (or at least makes it "not worse" than the stock airbox).

I actually plan on running a tube from the fog light area to the cone region to provide even more fresh air....THEN maybe it'll be overboard =P

And by the way, it sounds great if you're into that kind of thing.

The LL-TEK kit by itself can be worse 'n the "Home Depot" set-ups.

Default heh i saw your setup and went "oooooo time for a trip to home depot"....

i really like the idea, and have already KINDA started on it, with some VERY thin aluminum w/ some old insulation tape to extend the heatshiled to the rad support... hopefully when i get teh Audi i'll bring myself to spend the time to measure out/cut the top/side pieces and maybe even a bottom one, with a cutout for a Cold air pipe from the bumper!

Default You can buy the LL_TEK set-up. It falls short in the heat shield department(they all do) so you'll
