225 cm tread width; sidewall 45% of tread; Z speed rating; R17 inch rim; 90 = load factor; W=?

225mm, not cm. W is also speed rating, exceeds Z.

Default Y and W are subsets of Z, they don't really exceed Z ratings.

Meaning, Y and W were devised with a need for a further level of granularity than Z rating provided (over 149 mph). Any tire that qualifies as Y or W is also, by default, a Z rated tire.

Default 225mm section width, 45 aspect ratio (sidewall height is 45% of section width) Z is speed rating of

149+mph (formerly "unlimited")

R=radial tire (you'd be hard pressed to find a bias ply tire unless you're shopping for trucks or tractors)

17=wheel diameter

90=load factor (don't know exactly, but something close to 1900#)

W=further clarification of Z speed rating, W=168 mph, only Y is higher at 186 mph.

Hope this helps!

Default Imagine if you cut the tire in half, section width is the width of the tire at its widest, usually

mid-sidewall or midway between the wheel rim and the tire tread.

Default (Best Vader voice) "You are correct!" Early on, manufacturers went right to the end of the alphabet

for a speed rating of "unlimited" or 149+, but as cars got to be considerably faster, they had to back-paddle and invent new ratings for the higher speeds, thus W and Y.

Thank you, my error!--225cm would fit a small steamroller. Why would W appear at end & not near Z???
